Edge particles are particles which come in contact with the borders of the image frame. Since the portion of the particle outside the image frame is unknown, it is impossible to know the exact size of the particle. The MFI software allows the user to select whether they want to exclude the edge particles detected during a test. A graphical representation of edge particles can be seen in the figure.
Users who are more concerned with detecting rare events rather than the exact size of particle should include edge particles. This is also true for users needing to quantify particles greater than a certain size. However, users who require accurate sizing statistics should exclude the edge particles. If rare events are of interest and the user would like to have accurate statistics, the user should exclude edge particles and extend the duration of the test to overcome low particle statistics.
